MIGRAIN: Narrative

MIGRAIN: Narrative Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.   The movie Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit (Parks and Box: 2005) is a great example of Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.   A problem is repeatedly occurring from  Wallace and Gromit are catching rabbits and further makes complications continuously until Gromit realises Wallace has turned  into a man-rabbit because of the mind  control device. This therefore creates an exposition and an on going cycle until  Gromit battles to save Wallace  before it is too late and this provides  the climax to the film as a result creating a new equilibrium  at the the end of the movie. Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a  clip  on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of

MIGRAIN: Genre

MIGRAIN: Genre  Read  Media Factsheet 03 - Genre: Categorising texts  and answer the following questions: 1) What example is provided of why visual iconographies are so important? The example that  has been provided is when a person sitting at a desk is not genre specific. However, when high key lighting, a modern set, and a screen behind the character at the desk are combined, the image we associate with a news broadcast is created. 2) What examples are provided of the importance of narrative in identifying genre? The two examples are soap opera and a sit-com. Both use different narrative codes: sitcoms generally use episodic narratives, whereas soap operas typically use an open-ended, multi-strand narrative structure. 3) What is the difference between character representation in action movies and disaster movies?  However, it is unlikely that it will be used in an action film. Action heroes are usually dealing with much bigger issues. The narrative and plot are often part of generic

Blog feedback and Learner Response

Blog Feedback and Learner Response WWW: It’s great to see your Exam blog is 100% up to date which shows that you’ve stepped up to A Level and independent working. I agree with your reflections in the media consumption audit and also the examples you’ve chosen for the semiotics work. The challenge now is to keep up this level of organisation while using media terminology consistently in order to target those top grades.  EBI: The main feedback I would give is adding depth and detail to your blog work. For example, if you look at your questions on ‘English’ in the semiotics work or your ‘Reading an image’ work then you’ve completed the task but not written much more than one or two sentences for each question. The more you engage with the questions and explore a range of possible answers or interpretations that better you will do in Media. Similarly, if you broaden your media consumption as you plan to include newspapers and podcasts then this will also help you target the top grades.

Reception Theory

Reception Theory REEBOK AD The dominant reading presented in this advertisement by the producer of 50 Cent and the images of the finger prints is that he has left his gang and criminal life behind. This can be clear from the verbal codes of 'I am what I am'  conveys that he is not threatened by his past behaviour and has learnt from it. However, the counter hegemonic  reading can reveal that Reebok is trying to promote gang violence and criminal life style this is because 50 Cent wasn't always seen as a positive role model even if has changed his lifestyle now. The audience might not have time to read the text at first glance and would only focus on the icons which might give a negative reputation to Reebok. TABASCO  HOT SAUCE AD The dominant reading presented in this advertisement is to highlight that this Tabasco Sauce would be extremely hot and unbearable. However an oppositional view the audience might have is this sauce might be too hot and dangerous to consume
